Cooperate with God in Your Salvation

Man can accomplish nothing without God, and God has arranged His plans so as to accomplish nothing in the restoration of the human race without the cooperation of the human with the divine. The part man is required to sustain is immeasurably small, yet in the plan of God it is just that part that is needed to make the work a success.” God’s Amazing Grace, p. 319

God’s Part

God’s Part is what happens in the heart. “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” Ezekiel 36:26, 27

Our Part

Our Part is living out what God does inside. “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:12, 13

Step 1

God’s Part -He will draw you. “The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” Jer. 31:3

Our Part -Do not resist his drawing. “See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they es-caped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven.” Heb. 12:25

Step 2

God’s Part -He will make you feel guilty of sin. “And when he {Holy Spirit} is come, he will re-prove {convict} the world of sin, . . .” John 16:8

Our Part – Acknowledge your guilt and need of his righteousness. “Only acknowledge thine iniq-uity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers un-der every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the Lord.” Jer. 3:13

Step 3

God’s Part – He will give you repentance. “Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and for-bearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” Rom. 2:4

Our Part – Confess and forsake your sins and give him your heart. “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but who confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” Prov. 28:13

Step 4

God’s Part – He will forgive and cleanse from sin. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

Our Part – Believe and accept. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only be gotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. ” John 3:16

Step 5

God’s Part – He will live in you and empower you. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Phil. 2:13

Our Part– Live by faith and bear much fruit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuf-fering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Gal. 5:22, 23

Step 6

God’s Part – He will make a way of escape when you are tempted. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way of escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” 1 Cor. 10:13

Our Part – Take God’s way of escape and submit to Him. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.” James 4:7, 8

Step 7

God’s Part – He will be your advocate if you fall. “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” 1 John 2:1, 2

Our Part – Repent and turn back to Him by retracing your steps. “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” Isa. 55:6, 7
